TMA Hires New Athletic Director and Announces Athletic Restructuring
Throughout this year, TMA’s administration has been evaluating our athletic programs and personnel. We have been pleased with our growth and are preparing for further expansion and excellence. To that end, we are doing some restructuring in athletics that will take effect with this upcoming school year.
After 6 years of faithfully serving at TMA, Dwayne Whiteheart will be moving to North Carolina this summer to take a job with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. We are so grateful for all that Dwayne and his wife, Kelly, have contributed to the ministry of TMA during their time here and we wish he and his family all the best as they pursue this new endeavor. Also, with the recent success of our football program and our need to add some high school math courses, Mr. Robert East is going to transition into the role of Director of Football Operations / High School Math Teacher so that he can give full-time attention to further developing the football program and teaching math.
In light of our need for an Athletic Director, we engaged a search firm, Southern Teachers Association, to coordinate a national athletic director search. We received 37 applications and narrowed our search to four finalists.
We are pleased to announce that our first-choice candidate, Mr. Steve Denny, will be TMA’s Athletic Director beginning June 1, 2014. He will be moving from the Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK) with his wife and three sons. Mr. Denny has been serving the CAK as athletic director since 2008. Under his leadership, the CAK athletic department has earned 37 District Championships, 32 Regional Championships, 9 State Runners-up, and 14 Team State Championships. Steve is dedicated to giving our students an outstanding athletic experience during their TMA years. His passion is to develop young people, not only athletically, but also spiritually, emotionally, socially, and academically. He looks at athletic administration as “youth ministry with a ball.”
Steve has been described by peers as being a dedicated Christian and family man with high standards. He is said to go beyond expectations and is gifted in the areas of administration, leadership, and communication. Steve’s wife, Rebecca, is a school teacher and serves in the children’s ministry at their church. They have three sons Isaac, Micah, and Thaddeus.
Part of the vision of our restructuring athletics includes searching for ways to consistently provide your student with excellent athletic opportunities. Throughout this school year, we have been working to empower sport directors to lead their respective program. This means that many of our sports have “Directors” which oversee the entire program, from lower school ages all the way to varsity opportunities, allowing for a continuity that benefits each age level. Each of the directors, along with Mr. Denny and Coach Macbeth, will actively build programs for all age levels.
Many of the directors were hired from within our existing coaching staff, but our Director of Basketball Operations will be new to TMA. We are pleased to announce that effective June 1, 2014, Reggie Kohn, will join our staff as Director of Basketball Operations and Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach. His father, Steve Kohn, will continue as Upper School Dean of Students, serve as an assistant coach for the Varsity Boys Basketball team, and have an active role in the development of our basketball program.
Reggie is one of the most highly regarded coaches in Central Florida, having led teams to 10 of the last 11 FHSAA final fours. Under his leadership, Orlando Christian Prep has won four state titles in the last six years. His record at OCP was 160-24 and his overall high school coaching record is 270-42. We are excited to have Reggie bring championship level basketball to TMA. For several years TMA has had some of the finest basketball facilities and, with the hiring of Reggie Kohn, we now feel we have the best basketball coach in Central Florida. We look forward to having a program as successful as what Reggie was able to build at OCP.
In addition to serving as Director of Basketball Operations and Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at TMA, Reggie will also be the Lower School Dean of Students and an Upper School PE teacher. Please join us in welcoming both Steve Denny and Reggie Kohn to TMA in the coming months. We are privileged to partner with you and believe that, with prayerful consideration, we have put together a strong leadership team that will both continue TMA’s tradition of excellence as well as seek out new ways to soar to even greater heights. The following is a listing of the sport directors. A complete listing of coaches can always be found on the TMA athletic website.
